Yesterday was Sibling Loss Awareness Day. Child Loss is the Ultimate Loss, and parents’ grief (understandably) receives the most attention and sympathy.
David (almost 5!) has been increasingly more interested in Heaven — and Jacob — lately. Last week, as he climbed up on my lap for his morning snuggle, he casually said, “We’re all going to Heaven at the end of this week.”
When I asked for clarification, he repeated, “Our whole family is going to go to Heaven.”
Unexpected on a random Tuesday before the first cup of coffee for sure.
Turns out he’s not a prophet.
(whew)
When we were pregnant with David, I remember thinking it would be difficult to help him know a brother he never met. I realized I had some practice in this area, as I was able to help our big kids get to know their Grandma Gracie, who died before they were born.
Walking this new road of grief with David is tricky, and something I pray I’m doing right.
Recently David was talking about Jacob, and said, “I miss him.”
Unprepared to address this idea, and without fully thinking, I gently responded, “Well, Buddy. Jacob died before you were born, so you didn’t know him.”
With a serious face & trembling lip, he quietly insisted “But I DO miss him.” ![]()
A small voice inside me whispered, “Of course he misses him. Jacob is missing.”
