Thankfully, I had already discovered the magic of grocery pickup 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 the Pandemic began. Now, if I have to actually walk in and choose my own groceries (like a peasant!
), I’m mildly annoyed.
.
But I’ve noticed a lingering heart shift now when I place my grocery order. If I’m 100% honest, I now shop with a poverty mindset, with an underlying sense of fear.

It’s only been the last few months I’ve felt comfortable skipping our ridiculously large toilet paper order on Amazon.
(We legit are at our lowest toilet paper inventory in the last year, and still probably have 30-40 rolls in the house) And I would bet serious money we have at least 30 sticks of butter between all our freezers.
.
All it takes is one TikTok or post about prepping, rising grocery prices, or supply chain shortages, and the Scarcity Grocery Shopping amps up for a new round. We now have FOUR backstock locations in our house. Two are tubs that are “In-Case-of The-End of-the-World”. And I know they are still sadly lacking. (Of course, it doesn’t help when The Teenager goes through a BAG of cereal in 10 days.
)

All this from just 2-4 months of relativelty mild grocery store shortages in 2020. We never 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 went without. (And yes, I’m grateful we were – and are – financially able to ensure we have extra on hand.)
And we wondered why our grandparents still can food, or hold onto items no longer necessary. And we wondered, “𝘞𝘏𝘠?? 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳?” They lived through an 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 Depression, for pity’s sake. For a 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞. It all makes a lot more sense now, doesn’t it?
I have a friend who would roll her eyes & groan because her mom would wash, save, & re-use Ziplock bags (probably not actual Ziplock brand). I’m betting that mom grew up with parents who experienced the hardships of the Great Depression.
