The other day, David informed me he didn’t need his sippy cups any more, and we could use the drawer we stored them in for something else.
Since Jacob passed when he was just 2½ , it’s been 8 years since we’ve had a child age out of Sippy Cups. Such a simple thing. And really, these things are a sick & twisted marketing joke for parents:
“𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴, 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘴 — 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘢 50/50 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘶𝘱 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘩, 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 & 𝘴𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘰𝘵 & 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.”
Last month, David decided he didn’t need Pull Ups at night. He was (mostly) right. It wasn’t even a decision or discussion on our part. He was just ready.
Monday, dropping him off at 4K, without any warning to prepare my heart, he informed me he could walk himself in. And he almost made it. Within feet of the door, he stopped for 10 long seconds, and then came running back for his hug. Today, he sauntered straight in, with only the briefest look back. He was ready.
THIS is the goal, Friends. To equip our children to be READY for the next step. To be ready for the world.
Even if it breaks our heart a little.
